Ernest Dalton Hanowell, M.D.

Dr. Hanowell attended the University of California, Davis and George Washington University Medical
School where he graduated in 1973. He was a resident in general surgery at the George Washington University Medical Center
from 1973 to 1978 and was Chief Resident and Chief of the trauma service from 1977 to 1978. Dr. Hanowell is a senior
attending surgeon at the Johns Hopkins / Suburban Hospital and at the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. He also operates at
the Rockville Surgery Center and the Johns Hopkins / Suburban Hospital Ambulatory Care Center. He holds an academic appointment as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the George
Washington University Medical School. Dr. Hanowell is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the International College
of Surgeons, the Southeastern Surgical Congress, the Society of Laparo-endoscopic Surgeons and the American Society of General
Dr. Hanowell was President of the Medical Staff at the Johns Hopkins / Suburban Hospital from
2008 to 2010 and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Suburban Hospital from 2000 to 2003. He has also been chairman
of general surgery at both Suburban Hospital and Shady Grove Hospital. He was the director of the Suburban Hospital Trauma
Service for eight years and he chaired the Intensive Care Committee for six years.
While maintaining a full-service
general surgery practice, Dr. Hanowell has special expertise and experience in laparoscopic surgery, oncologic surgery and
breast surgery. Dr. Hanowell participated in the training of surgical residents from the Walter Reed Military Hospital
and the Washington Hospital Center. He has lectured in several areas including laparoscopy and breast surgery. He was an Instructor
in the American College of Surgeons Advanced Trauma Life Support Course (ATLS) and he lectured in advanced laparoscopic surgery
at The University at Sea.
